Acoustic Room Treatments
There is a secret that few audio dealers will tell you and that is that you already own the one piece of
equipment which has the biggest effect on sound quality; your listening room.
The very room you listen from is the most important link in the audio chain when it comes
to sound performance in today's high end home cinema systems. This fact is largely ignored
by most home cinema fans and not even receive second billing from most dealers and installers.
This is largely due to what is seen as almost a black art.
In a normal room, over 50% of what is heard by the listener comes directly as a result
of room influences, the most common of which are soundwave reflections.
In general, the vast majority of the sound is generated by the front three speakers,
namely the L/C/R front soundstage. The listener will hear a proportion of this sound as
it travels to, and then past their listening position. Soundwaves will then hit other room
surfaces such as walls and ceilings and work their way back around for another visit to
the listener's ears.
When these sounds combine, the listener will hear a combination of direct sound from their
speaker system along with numerous distorted versions of reflected sound. These reflected
sounds will consist of several layers of a delayed version of the original sound arriving
from the speaker system. This happens again and again until the reflected sound dissipates.
In other words, you do not hear the sound of your system on its own; you hear a
combination of the original sound source plus the reflections caused by your room.
By this time, the listener will have heard several versions of what is in effect a
subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) echo, the result of which will be to 'blur'
the original sound to the point of altering the perceived timbre of your speakers and
colouring the purity of your equipment.

equipment manufacturer (or indeed the movie director) intended, without the added
colouration of the room's acoustical influence to distort the final sonic picture.
